Ever told someone you’re considering hypnobirthing and their face instantly changes? You get ‘oooh no that’s not for me’ or ‘I wouldn’t want to lose control’ or worst of all ‘not that woo woo?’. For some reason, people seem to have very misunderstood views on hypnobirthing. It isn’t about losing control. Infact, it is actually about gaining control. It is about giving the woman the power and confidence to feel in control at a moment when she is totally surrendering to her own body and could otherwise feel extremely vulnerable.
Giving birth is one of the most significant stages of a woman’s life. Her brain and body change dramatically in preparation for labour and birth. Neuro pathways are being created, hormones are recalibrating and her organs are shifting to make way for the new life inside her (that her body has created by itself!). With all of these silent changes happening in the background, it is almost forgiveable to forget the wonders of her body. It is almost ok to expect the body to do the rest of the work too in birthing the baby. But……in what other situation would we not prepare for one of the most important days of our lives? Consider job interviews, weddings, holidays, sporting competitions. Preparation is important.
Hypnobirthing allows us to learn about the mind body connection. It values the subconscious and consciousness simultaneously. It respects the science and evidence informed practice to birth our babies with positivity and appreciate the magnitude of the situation. It understands that all births are incredibly unique and what is right for one person, is not right for another person. Hypnobirthing celebrates inclusivity, the maternity system and the female body whilst understanding the challenges that these bring.
Done right, over time, hypnobirthing can help us accept changes, know our rights, feel confident and can last for years. The impact can be huge and last a lifetime. What have you got to lose by giving it a try? You might just gain something incredible.
